La Liga giants Valencia would rather have signed Manchester United youngster Andreas Pereira than Spurs’ £30m misfit Moussa Sissoko.
You may be aware that Moussa Sissoko hasn’t quite lived up to his £30 million price tag at Tottenham Hotspur (BBC).
In fact, since arriving on deadline day 2016 from Newcastle United for what was then a club-record fee, the France international has started nine Premier League games, produced two assists and scored no goals. Newcastle must have been laughing all the way to the bank.
And it’s a major surprise that, now the transfer window has closed, Sissoko is still a Tottenham player despite manager Mauricio Pochettino barely trusting him with a place in the starting XI.
Yet, Spanish publication Super Deporte report that Spurs very nearly found a way to get Sissoko off the club’s books in the summer with Valencia keen to take him on a season-long loan deal – only to turn their attention to Manchester United starlet Andreas Pereira instead, thereby leaving the 28-year-old stuck in North London.
And the fact that Valencia would rather have a still unproven 21-year-old who was relegated from La Liga during a loan spell at Granada last season over a player who cost £30 million just over 12 months ago sums up just how far Sissoko’s reputation has fallen.
Plenty of Premier League flops have kick-started their career in Spain in recent seasons, a change in scenery bringing out the best in Stevan Jovetic, Iago Aspas and most recently Jesus Navas.
But Sissoko will now spend the next four months at least on the fringes of the Spurs’ first-team. He has played just 88 minutes of Premier League football this season and that tally appears unlikely to increase dramatically any time soon.
