Sheffield United’s move for Fleetwood Town striker Devante Cole broke down on transfer deadline day in August.

There was always going to be more pressure on Devante Cole than most other young strikers emerging in England. After all, his father Andy remains one of the greatest centre-forwards of the Premier League era, sitting third in the competition’s all-time top scoring charts.
22-year-old Devante, however, is beginning to carve out an impressive career in his own right – albeit in the third tier with Fleetwood Town rather than the Champions League in the colours of Manchester United.
Cole junior, who made his name in Manchester City’s academy, has eight goals in just 15 games for Fleetwood this season, equalling his career-best tally form 2016/17 with 31 games to spare.

No wonder Sheffield United have been alerted to Cole’s increasingly impressive performances. The Star reported in September that the youngster had been expected to complete a move to The Blades on transfer deadline day, only for talks to suddenly break down before the in-form striker had the chance to undergo a medical.
Second time lucky
The report, however, claimed that Sheffield United could yet renew their interest in the January transfer window. And they may be in luck with Fleetwood boss Uwe Rosler admitting that last season’s League One play-off semi-finalists may need to sell in the New Year.
“I have my ideas and we are discussing them,” Rosler told the Blackpool Gazette. “When nobody goes out, I don’t think there will be a lot of people coming in.

“But when people are going out – and that is what I am preparing for – we need to have a plan B and we need to bring in the necessary quality.”
Fleetwood may have a challenge on their hands if they are to replace the red-hot Cole in January.
However, although Sheffield United are sitting third in the Championship in their first season back in the second tier after six years away, their top scorer has only five goals so Cole would be welcomed with open arms.
