Former Leeds United head coach Uwe Rosler has explained he does not regret his short spell in charge at the club.

Speaking to the SkySports EFL Weekly Podcast, Rosler said that he while he knew the risks of working under Massimo Cellino before he took the job, it was too big an opportunity to turn down.

Rosler was appointed in 2015 as a replacement for Neil Redfearn, but did not reach Christmas as Leeds boss, with the Italian supremo wielding the axe after getting frustrated with results.

Leeds were mid-table at the time, and Rosler argues he was meeting his end of the bargain, based on discussions with Cellino when he took the job.

Rosler said: “I think I would have a regret if I didn’t take opportunity on.

“You back yourself, your confident, with what I did at Wigan in the beginning also at Brentford. I knew about the challenges, there’s no question about it but I have to say I only joined Leeds because the president gave me realistic targets, and the target I was given from him was to stay in the league.

“Unfortunately it [this target] had never been brought forward to the big following from Leeds United, so it was always left with a different impression to them, what had been given to me.”

Rosler said he was disappointed to be fired, but wishes the club well for the future.

He said: “We were there where the chairman wanted us to be, we developed young players, we played a certain way, we was just in the beginning 11 games into season, nowhere near bottom four.

“It was very hard to get sacked after the targets which were given before the season, but I do not regret taking Leeds United on, its a fantastic job with fantastic support. This season they’ve invested heavily, good luck to them and I hope Garry [Monk] can make it.”

Rosler is now manager of League One side Fleetwood Town, and even took on Leeds United in the EFL Cup earlier this season, with his side losing on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

He was replaced at Leeds by Steve Evans, who steered the club towards a 13th placed finish, but was also not kept on by Cellino, who chose to go with Garry Monk instead.
