Well, Mikel Arteta did nothing to help his cause as Arsenal boss this evening.

The Gunners produced yet another rather toothless display as Chelsea cruised to a 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium.

Boos rang around Arsenal’s home at half time following a disastrous first half in which Romelu Lukaku – who opened the scoring – had the beating of anybody who dared to come near him.

Nine days ago, Arteta’s side lost by the same scoreline at newly-promoted Brentford.

The Spanish coach, who won an FA Cup for the club 12 months ago, is in serious trouble and an angry tweet from former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong summed it up.

Context

It’s going to be open season on Arteta across social media.

But the situation does call for context and the truth is, he is missing some very big players.

Ben White and Gabriel Magalhaes, Arsenal’s best two centre-halves, missed the game with covid and injury respectively.

In midfield, Thomas Partey is sidelined with an ankle problem and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, their biggest goal threat, could only start on the bench after recovering from the coronavirus recently.

Alexandre Lacazatte remains unavailable for the same reason and it’s hard to believe that Arsenal’s first two Premier League games would’ve gone the same way had four of those players been eligible [White did play at Brentford].
