Liverpool supporters weren’t too pleased with Gini Wijnaldum being handed the captaincy during Wednesday night’s Champions League showdown with Real Madrid.

The ever-reliable, James Milner, started off the night as captain, but as Liverpool searched for goals in the second half, he was brought off.

The more attack-minded, Thiago Alcantara, came on for Milner in the 60th-minute, as Wijnaldum was then handed the armband.

Given that Wijnaldum’s contract is up at the end of the season, and there doesn’t seem to be any sign that he will pen down a new deal, it’s not exactly sitting well with the supporters that the Dutchman is the captain.

Andy Robertson could have perhaps been another viable option for captain, after all, he does take that honour for Scotland.

Of course, it doesn’t help matters when Liverpool failed to score in yet another game and their season now hangs on them finishing in the top four.

Either way, on a disappointing night for the Reds, which saw them exit before the semi-final stage, the decision on Wijnaldum didn’t exactly please the Anfield faithful.
