Markkanen continues to attract league-wide interest as Utah balances short-term results with a long-term rebuild.

The Utah Jazz currently sit 10th in the Western Conference, which would place them in the final play-in spot if the postseason began today.

Despite winning two straight games, Utah holds a 10–15 record and is still widely expected to slide back toward the lottery. As a result, attention has once again turned to the franchise’s broader direction — and, in particular, what the Jazz plan to do with Lauri Markkanen.

Markkanen has been a fixture in trade rumors for several seasons, regularly linked to contending teams across the league. However, despite consistent outside interest, Utah has continued to hold onto its All-Star forward.

According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, that approach is not expected to change in the near future. Executives around the league have connected Markkanen to teams such as the San Antonio Spurs, Memphis Grizzlies and Detroit Pistons, but Utah’s internal plan remains focused on building around him.

The Jazz reportedly want to maintain significant cap flexibility this summer, using that space to strengthen the roster before committing to long-term extensions — including a future deal for Walker Kessler. If Utah does end up in the lottery this season, the hope internally is that it will be the last time for the foreseeable future, as the team transitions from asset accumulation to competitiveness.

While Markkanen continues to draw strong interest, Utah’s priority is retaining him and constructing a roster capable of sustained success rather than accelerating a rebuild through a trade.

Lauri Markkanen’s 2025–26 production

On the court, Markkanen has continued to deliver elite-level production. He is coming off a dominant performance against the Dallas Mavericks, scoring 33 points and grabbing 16 rebounds in a game that overshadowed Cooper Flagg’s 42-point night.

For the season, Markkanen is averaging 27.8 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 46.9 percent from the field and 35.2 percent from three-point range. Those numbers place him firmly in All-Star territory once again.

Although Utah has struggled to translate his production into wins, the Jazz appear committed to a patient approach — one that keeps Markkanen at the center of their plans as they look toward next season and beyond.
