Real Madrid are on course to finish a second consecutive season without a trophy, something that has not happened at the club in 16 years.

Xabi Alonso was dismissed earlier in the season, leading to Alvaro Arbeloa stepping in for the remainder of the season. However, the former full-back is not expected to remain in charge beyond the current campaign.

Their Champions League quarter-final exit to Bayern Munich appears to have intensified focus on who will lead the club into next season.

Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly part of Real Madrid’s shortlist for next season, according to RMC Sport.

The Argentine is currently under contract with the United States national team until the end of the World Cup, and he previously said he was open to renewing the deal after the tournament.

However, his situation has now shifted. Pochettino could be en route to a destination that few would expect, with Madrid monitoring his availability closely.

His previous work with Kylian Mbappe at Paris Saint-Germain could strengthen his case, given the forward’s importance at the club.

Other high-profile names also under consideration

The French outlet also reports that Real Madrid are considering other established figures as part of their shortlist.

Didier Deschamps has been mentioned among the potential options for the role.

Jurgen Klopp is another name linked, although there are no clear indications he is planning a return to management.
