Leeds United’s Marcus Antonsson was left out of the squad to face Sheffield Wednesday.
Leeds’ Marcus Antonsson in action
Whilst Pontus Jansson has become a fan favourite during his time at Elland Road, a fellow Swede hasn’t enjoyed quite as much success since his own summer move to West Yorkshire.
Jansson has been a mainstay of Garry Monk’s side so far, but fellow Swede Marcus Antonsson has been a bit-part player in Leeds’ push for promotion.
Signed from Kalmar last summer after scoring 22 goals in 41 games, Antonsson arrived as cover and competition for main striker Chris Wood, but he has so far struggled to make an impact.
The 25-year-old has scored just three times in all competitions this season, with his last goal coming against Norwich City in the EFL Cup way back in October.
Antonsson has now slipped down the pecking order at Elland Road, as he wasn’t even in the squad to take on Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday afternoon, with some suggestions that his Leeds career could be coming to an end already.
Last week, Antonsson told Barometern in his native Sweden that he isn’t heading back to the Allsvenskan just yet, but he has had interest from rival clubs as he struggles for first-team football at Leeds.
Leeds United’s Marcus Antonsson celebrates
Now, with Leeds entering the final stages of the season, they will need their entire squad to chip in and earn a return to the Premier League. Star striker Wood has scored 20 goals this season, but the nearest to him in league goals in Souleymane Doukara with five.
Antonsson deserves chances to shine in the promotion run-in, as he hasn’t been given enough of an opportunity to prove his quality since arriving in West Yorkshire – and if Monk doesn’t give him first-team football between now and the end of the season, a return to Sweden could be more appealing this summer, whilst Leeds would almost certainly seek an upgrade should they win promotion, unless Antonsson can become Leeds’ unlikely promotion hero this term.
