Brenden Aaronson had a night to forget for the United States, as the new Leeds star was hooked at half-time during a Nations League clash against El Salvador – and US Media were unimpressed with the midfielder.

In what was his 55th game for club and country during 2021-22, Aaronson started for USA in the early hours of Wednesday morning. But he struggled, as El Salvador took a 1-0 lead into the half-time break.

It saw USA boss Greg Berhalter decide to remove £25million Leeds recruit Aaronson, and bring on Tottenham target Weston McKennie in his place. USA finally equalised in injury time, with both sides down to 10 men.

While they avoided defeat and remain in a solid second in the three-nation Nations League group – boasting a game in hand and only a point behind first – Aaronson was poor. CBS Sports gave the Leeds man a 5/10 rating:

“Struggled to find the game and was withdrawn at half-time. The midfield experiment doesn’t seem to be going as well within Concacaf as it did against stronger sides. Something that Aaronson and Berhalter will need to work on.”

US Media unimpressed with Leeds star Aaronson

It was a difficult one for Aaronson – but the Leeds man deserves sympathy. The youngster has been forced to play well over 50 games for club and country, including huge travelling from Europe to his home country to play.

Aaronson is in desperate need of rest, more than most of his US teammates. Even Juventus midfielder McKennie has only managed 40 appearances for club and country in 21-22 – a whole 15 less than Aaronson.

The Leeds ace needs a break and his below-par showing for his country on Tuesday night can surely be excused. Time to rest up; perhaps Leeds need to consider a slightly extended break for their national stars.
