USA head coach Bruce Arena has suggested that Newcastle United will be without DeAndre Yedlin for the next five weeks after he sustained a thigh injury, the Shields Gazette reports.

Yedlin has not featured in either of the Magpies’ last two games after picking up the injury in the recent win over Brighton. Despite playing nine minutes in the game that followed the Seagulls win, the right-back has had to look on as Rafa Benitez’s men drew with Reading and lost at home to Fulham.

And unfortunately for Newcastle fans, Arena has confirmed after the defender was examined by his country’s doctors ahead of the upcoming international break, that he is set for a fairly lengthy spell on the sidelines.

“DeAndre has been in LA this past week and examined by our team doctors,” he said, as reported by the Shields Gazette.

“We realise he is not going to be able to go to these next two matches against Honduras and Panama.

“It is likely he will be out for about five weeks. I would expect he will be back on the field for Newcastle right at the end of this season in April.”

The news means that Yedlin may be facing a race against time to get back fit in time for Newcastle’s clash with Preston North End towards the end of April.

Although the Magpies currently boast a significant cushion over the sides chasing the top two in the Championship, Huddersfield have a game in hand so could close the gap to just three points.

And not having Yedlin for the majority – after Preston, Newcastle have two more games – of what appears to be setting up to be a fairly tight run-in could be a blow to their chances of ensuring that they go up automatically.
