Player ratings for Uruguay as they suffer a 3-1 defeat to Costa Rica that leaves them facing an early exit from the 2014 World Cup.
Uruguay went down 3-1 at the hands of Group D minnows Costa Rica at the World Cup on Saturday.
An Edinson Cavani penalty gave the 2010 World Cup semi-finalists a 1-0 lead after former West Bromwich Albion defender Diego Lugano was fouled in the penalty area.
However, three second-half goals from Arsenal forward Joel Campbell, Oscar Duarte and Marcos Urena gave Costa Rica a deserved win, one that puts Uruguay’s 2014 hopes into doubt.

Fernando Muslera – 6
The goalkeeper had little to do other than pick the ball out of his net three times.
Maxi Pereira – 5
The full-back struggled to have his normal energetic and positive performance, and his night was capped off when he was sent off after 93 minutes for a reckless kick on Campbell.
Martin Caceres – 6
Not a solid performance from the former Barcelona man, who wasn’t helped by how exposed his defence was.
Walter Gargano – 6
Failed to protect his defence from the pace of the Costa Rica attacks. Kept the ball well, however, in the first half.
Diego Lugano – 5
The 33 year-old may have won the penalty, but struggled with the pace of Campbell. Looked exposed in defence.
Diego Godin – 6
Atletico Madrid defender failed to match his form of the previous season – perhaps the number of matches he played his season caught up on him.
Christian Stuani – 6
Solid performance by the midfielder, kept Bryan Ruiz quiet throughout the ex-Fulham man’s involvement of the match.
Arevalo Rios – 6
Created chances and fed Cavani with through balls, however failed to do his job defensively tracking back and faded as the game wore on.
Diego Forlan – 5
The former Manchester United player may have been player of the tournament four years ago, but his performance tonight wasn’t of the same standard. Very reminiscent of his time in England – poor.
Edinson Cavani – 7
The Paris Saint-Germain striker scored his side’s goal from the penalty spot and looked lively in Luis Suarez’s absence.
Cristian Rodriguez – 7
Solid performance from the Atletico Madrid player, played the ball back and worked hard for his team going backwards. His teammates just failed around him.
Subs:
Nicolas Lodeiro – 6
Came on for Forlan after an hour and did better than him, although he didn’t create any clear chances.
Alvaro Gonzalez – 6
Came on for Gargano and as Uruguay tried to push forward and left too much space in midfield.
Abel Hernandez – 5
The striker didn’t have many opportunities to get into the game.
