Speaking on the Die for Three Points Podcast, Neil Warnock has been discussing his England squad ahead of the World Cup.
Warnock was naming the players he’d have in his starting XI, and he says that he would reserve a special role for Callum Wilson.
Understandably, Wilson wasn’t down as Warnock’s first-choice striker. After all, Harry Kane is the England captain, but Warnock says that he’d have Wilson up his sleeve as a secret weapon to come on and change the game with half an hour to go.
Wilson up his sleeve
Warnock spoke about the role he’d have the Newcastle striker playing.
“I would have Harry Kane up front, and I would have up my sleeve Wilson. I’m glad he’s taken Wilson. I know it’s disappointing for Toney who has done well, but I think Wilson has something different on the shoulder. For half an hour him, Saka, Maddison and Grealish we have some real players who can change a game,” Warnock said.
Something different
Warnock is absolutely right, Wilson is exactly the type of player who can provide something different to this team.
The Newcastle striker’s pace and movement can stretch any defence, while Kane, as we know, prefers to drop deep and create chances all by himself.
Kane, of course, is a talented player in his own right who poses his own threats, but there is more than one way to skin a cat and unlocking a defence is a unique task that may require a player like Wilson in certain situations.
The Newcastle striker could be a huge asset to England when they come unstuck at times during this tournament.
