Should Manchester United consider signing Tottenham’s Kevin Wimmer?
Manchester United’s Marcos Rojo lies injured
Manchester United considered adding a centre-back in the January transfer window only to decide against it due to the excellent form of Marcos Rojo.
The Argentine held down a place as a regular in Jose Mourinho’s defence through 2017 before he suffered a serious knee injury against Anderlecht a fortnight ago.
With his recovery set to role over into next season, United will need to revisit signing another defender, especially with Chris Smalling’s continuous injury issues holding him back too.

One option they should look at could be a player unwanted by Tottenham Hotspur who has made a promising start in the Premier League.
Austrian international Kevin Wimmer has been restricted to only 15 league games in two seasons, but played superbly at the back end of last campaign when replacing the injured Jan Vertonghen.
The London Evening Standard report Wimmer is to be allowed to leave Tottenham, who are targeting Harry Maguire instead.
Wimmer’s performances over the last two seasons see him compare relatively well with both Rojo and Smalling, beating both out in terms of passing accuracy and average number of shots blocked per game.
| Passing Accuracy | Won Tackles per game | Interceptions per game | Ball Recoveries per game | Aerial Duels Won per game | Shots Blocked per game | Effective Clearances per game | Appearances | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kevin Wimmer | 87% | 0.33 | 1.6 | 3.4 | 1.13 | 0.67 | 3.27 | 15 |
| Chris Smalling | 84% | 0.92 | 2.1 | 4.58 | 3.36 | 0.54 | 4.56 | 50 |
| Marcos Rojo | 81% | 1.46 | 1.62 | 5.03 | 2.05 | 0.3 | 4.51 | 37 |

Wimmer’s lack of football compared to the United duo makes him tough to accurately assess, but he has shown enough to indicate he could be a very useful squad player for Jose Mourinho to consider, and one who is not plagued by injury issues.
The Sun report United’s top defensive target is Michael Keane of Burnley, but with other expensive additions like Antoine Griezmann to weight up, a cheaper addition like Wimmer could prove a worthy option.
