Everton Under-23s manager David Unsworth has described derby ace Nathan Broadhead as “one of the best players” he’s coached at that level.
The Wales youth international struck twice against Liverpool at Anfield on Monday night to help the Toffees secure a 2-0 win, converting crosses from Josh Bowler and then Anthony Gordon.
Everton’s result maintained their four point lead at the top of Premier League 2 as well as giving them bragging rights over their bitter rivals in the “mini-derby”.
Broadhead, 20, has been in the academy for a decade and Unsworth is confident that either a loan move away or even a first-team training berth is up for grabs.
“He’s terrific,” Unsworth is quoted by the Liverpool Echo as saying. “It’s up to him what the next step is… maybe a loan is the next step, maybe training with the first-team – but that’s up to the manager – but he has certainly given himself a platform.”
“He’s a top young player and one of the best players I’ve worked with at this level. I hope he goes on and has a wonderful career because his ability certainly deserves that.”
Broadhead has extensive experience in Everton’s second string, Transfermarkt listing him with 36 appearances in the U23s, including four goals and four assists.
However, he has featured for just eight minutes of senior action, a substitute cameo against Apollon Limassol in the 2017-18 Europa League campaign, according to Transfermarkt.
Given such plaudits from Unsworth, could Broadhead potentially follow the likes of Tom Davies, Jonjoe Kenny and Dominic Calvert-Lewin into establishing himself in Everton’s first team?
