Gary Neville labelled Georginio Wijnaldum an ‘unsung’ hero after Martin Tyler was talking about the midfielder’s future at Anfield, as broadcast on Sky Sports during Liverpool’s win at West Ham on Sunday evening.

It has been well-documented for a while now that the technically-gifted Liverpool player is out-of-contract in the summer.

The Athletic have previously reported that the Holland international is still unsure about what he will do amid interest from Barcelona.

It was perfect timing, but just before Wijnaldum scored for Liverpool at the London Stadium, Martin Tyler was speaking about his future and Neville issued this response when he put the ball into the back of the net.

“We are just going to talk about Wijnaldum,” said Neville. “You said what are his options at the end of the season.

“He’s an unsung hero, really in this Liverpool team. Someone you don’t quite notice amongst the other really good players that they have.

“But he does a brilliant job. He gets a good goal.”

If Wijnaldum does leave then Liverpool will have to find his replacement because he has been a very important figure during these past few years.

The question remains whether that player comes from within – Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones – are options.

Or does Jurgen Klopp search the transfer market even though he has a high volume of midfielders already at the club?
