Oscar Piastri kept his cool during the Japanese Grand Prix, even after a pit stop error from McLaren may have cost him the win.

Kimi Antonelli admitted he found it tough to deal with Piastri, who remained composed throughout the race despite trailing behind the Mercedes.

McLaren appeared more evenly matched with Mercedes this weekend, and Piastri didn’t miss the chance to put both drivers under pressure.

Piastri did well to keep George Russell behind him for most of the race, only losing position briefly before regaining control.

Even though McLaren’s strategy decision likely cost him a shot at victory, Piastri handled the situation maturely, both during and after his second-place finish was confirmed.

Oscar Piastri’s Composure Shown in Radio Response to McLaren Pit Call

Oliver Bearman’s crash at Suzuka brought out the safety car, allowing Mercedes to pit Kimi Antonelli for a fresh set of hard tyres, while McLaren had only just stopped both Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris a few laps prior.

Piastri, upon hearing about the safety car over team radio, showed no outward frustration. Instead, he calmly checked in on the strategy choices of his main competitors.

“Is Antonelli still out?…”

After finishing second, Piastri kept his focus on the positives, praising his team despite being frustrated with how the race unfolded. He didn’t direct any anger toward anyone and maintained a supportive tone throughout.

“Wow. Turns out when we start these things, we’re pretty good. Well done, everybody. That was a great weekend.

“Unfortunate about the safety car. I think we’ve still got a bit of time to find. But well done, everybody. We deserve that. Thank you.”

Oscar Piastri’s response was drastically different from George Russell

In contrast, Piastri kept his frustration in check and focused on supporting his team, both during and after the race. His approach stood in stark contrast to how George Russell handled a similar situation.

Russell was not happy with Mercedes’ pit strategy, letting his feelings be known on the radio. While his frustration was understandable, Russell’s message did not please Mercedes at all.

Piastri’s composure and positive attitude were noted by many as qualities needed to compete at the highest level.

It’s clear he’ll want to avoid these kinds of setbacks in future races, but the way he backed his team showed signs of leadership and maturity that could serve him well over the season.
