Paul Merson stated that ex-Tottenham man, Christian Eriksen, was ’different class’ during Brentford’s shocking 4-1 win over Chelsea, as he told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports.
Tottenham fans should be used to Eriksen scoring at Stamford Bridge because he did so in 2018 when Spurs won 3-1 at Chelsea for the first time in 28 years.
Well, whilst his dipping effort from long-range in Spurs colours didn’t match the close-range finish for Brees yesterday.
It was still a valuable goal for the 30-year-old, who is starting to find his old form after the dreadful events he had to go through last summer at the Euro 2020.
Merson certainly liked what he saw from the Danish playmaker, as he labelled his passing as ‘unreal’ against a Chelsea side that had the likes of N’Golo Kante, Mason Mount and Antonio Rudiger.
“Some of Eriksen’s passing was unreal,” said Merson. “It was just different class. I mean the couple of passes he played.
“They (Brentford) all played well. You are going to Chelsea and you are winning 4-1.
“There aren’t too many players that are going to walk off the pitch with a six out of ten and win (at Chelsea). They have to play to the max and all of them did.”
Before Eriksen stopped playing for health reasons, it needs to be remembered that he had just won the Serie A title with Inter Milan.
It was Antonio Conte who brought him to the club when the Italian giants paid Spurs £17 million for his talents in 2020 from Spurs (BBC Sport).
One obvious area of the pitch has a hole in it for Spurs, regardless of Harry Kane dropping deep and showcasing his inner Kevin de Bruyne, and that’s the number ten role.
They have craved that out-and-out playmaker since Eriksen departed the club and it wouldn’t be a surprise if some of them are calling for him to return in the summer.
At the end of the day, he knows Tottenham very well, he’s back to his best and Conte only worked with him last season.
