Tottenham Hotspur have been linked to signing Chelsea hitman Romelu Lukaku in recent weeks.
On April 14, Italian publication La Republicca reported that Tottenham was a very realistic destination for the out-of-favour Blues marksman.
Prior to that, Gazzetta dello Sport also claimed that Lukaku was a target for Spurs manager Antonio Conte who, of course, worked with the big Belgian striker at Inter Milan.
It’s been a pretty horrible first season back at Chelsea following a £98 million transfer to Stamford Bridge last summer.
But don’t write Lukaku off just yet.
Tonight, the 28-year-old earned only his third Premier League start since January for the visit to Leeds United – and he impressed in a big way.
The big man was a constant threat to the Whites’ defence and scored his side’s third of the evening late on.
Here’s what Paul Robinson said about his performance via BBC Radio 5 Live: “Romelu Lukaku has deserved that. Lukaku thoroughly deserves that, he has been excellent. He hasn’t done it often enough this season, but when he plays like this he is unplayable.”
Tottenham interested in Lukaku
There’s no doubting that Lukaku is an immense striker on his day, as Robinson quite rightly pointed out.
Problem is, he’s far too inconsistent and that’s a massive worry for any team interested in signing him this summer, particularly in the Premier League.
Lukaku has a lot of experience in England’s top flight – 276 appearances, to be specific – and the former Manchester United striker just isn’t at an elite level.
He just isn’t Harry Kane, someone you’d put the mortgage on to score more than 20 Premier League goals a season.
Conte knows the player as good as anyone and with that in mind, it seems unlikely that he’ll be calling on Daniel Levy to break the bank to sign Lukaku this summer; particularly if Kane is sticking around.
