Rangers move to sign Goldson could be reportedly hijacked by English sides, should Leeds be one of those?

The Daily Express, via the Scottish Sun, has claimed that Rangers face competition from English Championship sides for the signature of Brighton defender Connor Goldson this summer, so should one of those teams be Leeds United?

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers have already had two bids rejected for the 25-year-old rock, who is said to be available for around £3million this summer after failing to break his way into Brighton’s side.

The 6ft 3in stopper managed just eight appearances in all competitions for the Seagulls this season, with the inseparable pair of Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy proving invaluable at the back for Chris Hughton’s side.

It means that the former Shrewsbury Town skipper will be allowed to leave the Amex Stadium this month, and talks are continuing between Rangers and Brighton over a move that would see Goldson travel north of the border.

But with the Express claiming that there is interest from the English Championship, Leeds United should be one of the names on the list ahead of the summer window.

Centre-back was somewhat of a problem area for Leeds last season, with captain Liam Cooper and loanee Matthew Pennington’s indifferent form culpable for many goals conceded by the Yorkshire giants.

It saw Paudie O’Connor break into the side towards the end of the season, as Paul Heckingbottom axed a number of underperforming first-teamers to give the likes of O’Connor, Tom Pearce, Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Ryan Edmondson a go.

But if the Whites are to gain promotion back to the Premier League for the first time since 2004, they need a commanding centre-back that is proven at Championship level. At £3million, Goldson would be the perfect centre-back buy this summer.
