Gabby Agbonlahor has posted on Twitter ‘unlucky Newcastle’ as Aston Villa seemingly edge closer to signing Everton’s, Lucas Digne.
talkSPORT have reported that Digne has accepted personal terms with Villa and he is set to complete a £25 million move to the Midlands outfit.
It seems as though Steven Gerrard’s side have beaten off some serious competition, including Chelsea, West Ham and Newcastle, for the 28-year-old’s signature.
After securing a loan deal for Philippe Coutinho, which was a statement of intent from Villa in itself, well this is yet another one for the European-chasing side.
Some would even probably feel that it is a surprise given Digne’s qualities and that he is more than capable of playing for a team in Europe right now.
Two of the teams seemingly in for his talents – West Ham and Chelsea – are in the Europa League or are the European champions.
Either way, Agbonlahor is loving the rumours coming out about Digne and he also thanked a certain Rafa Benitez for seemingly playing a helping hand.
Digne hasn’t played for Everton since the Merseyside derby defeat in December and something has clearly gone on with the left-back and his manager.
Whatever it is, it’s resulting in him heading for the exit door and another team getting a player of high calibre.
It needs to be remembered that Digne is a France international and one of the best attack-minded full-backs in the Premier League.
Whilst Digne’s potential signing won’t push Matt Targett straight out of the starting spot, he certainly now has serious competition to deal with.
From a defensive standpoint, there isn’t much to worry about from Targett because he is pretty sound.
But he lacks that bite, aggression and all-action style in the final third and he may eventually find himself warming the bench if Digne is signed up.
