The Glasgow Rangers midfielder has raw talent but is still a few years away.

While Ross McCrorie has taken to Rangers’ senior side like a duck to water, not all the club’s talented teenagers can be expected to hit the ground running, and 18-year-old Jamie Barjonas needs more time before he can be considered a first-team regular.

The midfielder played 73 minutes for Rangers against Hibernian earlier this week, and he did a fine job in light of the injuries and suspensions currently blighting Graeme Murty’s team.

The interim Rangers boss is not afraid to give youth a chance and Barjonas, like many before him, did his best. Unfortunately for those Gers supporters hoping for another McCrorie, it is going to be a while longer before the midfielder is as indispensable as the defender has already become.

That is perfectly understandable given Barjonas’s age and inexperience, with different players maturing and staking their claim at different times.

For now the teenager can do a job, but it would be no surprise if he slipped back into the shadows once everyone at Rangers is back.

While a few cameo appearances are likely in the coming months, Barjonas may not prove his true worth until his early twenties.

In the meantime the Rangers youngster will learn from every minute he is on the field and continue his development with the second string and a potential loan move in due course.
