Chris Sutton has claimed that Newcastle would have to pay ‘£150 million’ to sign Chris Wood from Burnley, as he told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport.

The BBC pundit added that he would be ‘absolutely shocked’ if Sean Dyche sold his striker to Newcastle.

Whilst it was obvious that Newcastle were going to spend money in January, the striker position has become a bit more desperate given the injury to Callum Wilson.

As a result, they have been touted to sign near-on every name under the sun, including that of Burnley hitman Wood, as reported by the Telegraph.

The Clarets are sitting in the Premier League’s relegation zone, alongside Newcastle, and it would be daft from their perspective to sell such a key player to a rival.

And Sutton can’t see such a deal happening, unless a ridiculous amount of money is put on the table, even though he thinks it would be a ‘great’ purchase.

“Chris Wood would be a great signing, wouldn’t he?” said Sutton. “But if you are Burnley, why on earth are you going to sell Chris Wood?

“Unless it’s for £150 million because you want to stay in the Premier League yourselves.

“Unless Sean Dyche was going to bring in an absolute superstar. And who would want to go to Burnley on the best of times? And they are struggling in the Premier League.

“That’s not just going to happen. I would be absolutely shocked.”

Hundreds of hundreds of names have been linked with the big-money pockets of Newcastle, but only Kieran Trippier has, so far, arrived.

It’s up for debate how many players they would need, but possibly weakening their relegation rivals would be a starter.

But, as mentioned above, serious, serious money needs to be put on the table for an offer to be accepted.

And that’s where Newcastle need to be wary of not going overboard and spending their money in a stupid manner.
