A select round-up of the latest news relating to Manchester United…

Football journalist Jan Aage Fjortoft claims Toni Kroos agreed to join Manchester United this summer, only to change his mind when Louis van Gaal replaced David Moyes.

The German international was strongly linked with United while the Scotsman was in charge, but ultimately he swapped Bayern Munich for Real Madrid.

Fjortoft claims he has it on good authority that Kroos had said yes to an Old Trafford switch, and there is no doubt the midfielder would have added real quality to that area. Instead United ultimately moved for Ander Herrera and Daley Blind.

In other news, the Daily Mail reports that Chris Smalling could miss the weekend match against West Ham United after picking up a thigh injury in training.

United are already without the suspended Tyler Blackett and the injured Phil Jones and Jonny Evans, and if Smalling is indeed ruled out that would leave van Gaal with just one senior centre-back to call on in the form of Marcos Rojo.
