Rio Ferdinand has taken to Twitter to comment on Darwin Nunez, after Liverpool just completed a £64m deal for the Uruguay international.
What’s the story?
Well, Liverpool announced the 22-year-old’s arrival on Tuesday evening, with the deal potentially reaching a club-record £85m in add-ons.
Nunez arrives amid doubts over Sadio Mane’s future at Anfield – Liverpool have already received a number of bids from Bayern Munich for the Senegal international.
Whatever happens with the 30-year-old, Ferdinand believes Jürgen Klopp has signed a “top” forward to replace the Liverpool No.10 on Merseyside.
The BT Sport pundit wrote: “Watched a lot of this guy in the Champions League last season. Virgil van Dijk gave a glowing reference in a recent interview. Looks like a top signing for Liverpool unfortunately.”
It must’ve taken a lot for Ferdinand to swallow his pride and say this, as his beloved Manchester United were also firmly in the race to sign Nunez from Benfica.
It doesn’t surprise us that England’s two biggest clubs were fighting for the South American.
In 41 games last season, Nunez remarkably scored 34 goals, while also providing four assists.
Darwin Nunez move should interest Liverpool fans
In our view, there will be a lot to learn from how Nunez performs.
Interestingly, this is the first significant signing made under Julian Ward, who has replaced Michael Edwards as the transfer specialist at Liverpool – Sporting Director, to be more specific.
Edwards rarely made a mistake in the market, finding some unbelievable bargains such as Mohamed Salah for £34m.
Now, if Nunez struggles in the Premier League, some Liverpool fans may start to think Ward doesn’t have the same eye for a player.
Nevertheless, with 34 goals last season and a manager like Klopp now mentoring him, we can’t see the Uruguayan failing at Liverpool – everything is in place for him to become a superstar at Anfield.
