Ruben Neves’ sensational season for Wolves was not enough to earn him a World Cup place.
Neves was a notable omission from Portugal’s squad which was named last night.
The former Porto midfielder led Wolves to promotion and won individual awards for his performances, scoring highlight reel goals and rising to the challenge.
Wolves fans were understandably shocked at Neves’ omission, but Neves was not surprised.
Speaking to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo yesterday before the squad was announced, Neves played down his chances and insisted he could see the logic behind a potential snub.
He said: “Very sincerely I was not surprised [if I stayed out], because Portugal has a lot of quality players.
“It will be very well served, whatever the choices.”
Neves was right not to get ahead of himself with manager of the Euro 2016 winners Fernando Santos feeling he was not required.
The good news for Neves is that time is on his side. At just 21-years-old, he could potentially play at the next three World Cup tournaments if his career continues at an upwards trajectory.
Wolves will hope they can do enough to ensure he is still playing for them when the 2022 tournament arrives.
