Goals in back to back games ahead of the Old Firm derby made Rangers midfielder Ovie Ejaria undroppable heading into the game.

Steven Gerrard’s faith in the Liverpool loanee looked justified, with Ejaria netting a particularly impressive goal for Rangers in the Europa League.

The Old Firm game was the biggest match of Ejaria’s career so far and the Rangers loanee will not feel it went well.

Rangers lost the goal and Ejaria was at fault for failing to track his man in the lead up to Oliver Ntcham’s winner.

Ejaria showed a lack of fight and nous as he abandoned his chase down of Celtic’s attack in the game’s decisive moment.

This may have been due to tiredness from his exploits on Thursday night, but it showed a weakness in his psyche to just give up.

Ejaria is only 20-years-old, and deserves some leniency and room to learn.

He has made huge strides since signing for Rangers and will hope to improve and learn from this disappointment.

In the more immediate future, Ejaria faces a threat from his position from the returning Lassana Coulibaly, who has missed the last fortnight through injury.

This has helped Ejaria’s emergence, but his performance provides an opening for Coulibaly to go straight back into the side.

It would not be a surprise to see the Malian midfielder start against Dundee on September 15 if he is fully fit.

Lassana Coulibaly of Rangers is seen during the Pre-Season Friendly match between Rangers and Wigan Athletic at Ibrox Stadium on July 29, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.
