Michael Beale has told Rangers TV that Ben Davies needs to start chipping in with goals for Rangers as he looks to form a partnership with Connor Goldson in defence – following Wednesday night’s 3-0 win over Motherwell at Ibrox.
The 27-year-old has endured a pretty torrid time with injuries since moving north of the border to Rangers. The left-footed centre-back has only managed 17 appearances in all competitions, four of which have come off the bench.
Ahead of the World Cup, he started seven games in a row – before missing the last one, a 1-1 draw with St. Mirren. Beale has had to wait to get him back in the team, being used as a sub in his first two games. But he is now back.
Davies, bought for £4million, has started the last two games and it is no surprise to see Rangers pick up back-to-back clean sheets. Beale has four wins from four. Speaking after the match, Beale urged Davies to start scoring.
Connor Goldson, his centre-back partner, got his first of the season on Wednesday night. In between an Alfredo Morelos header, and a neat Malik Tillman finish. Beale wants his centre-backs to be scoring goals regularly.
“I’m expecting Goldson to go and get five or six more before the end of the season. Ben has got to chip in as well. It’s important that we’re effective in those moments. It’s been an area that we’ve underperformed this season.”

A huge part of Steven Gerrard’s era at Rangers was the ability the Gers had to score goals from any part of the pitch. Goldson has 21 goals and 10 assists in his 243 appearances for the Ibrox club. A decent return.
Davies has opened his account for Rangers, netting in the 4-1 win over Aberdeen. But Beale is right, they are crucial. When frustrated by a low block, set-pieces can get Rangers over the line. Davies needs to score goals.
