Fabian Schar has been speaking to Swiss news outlet SRF, where he made an interesting claim about life at Newcastle under Mike Ashley.
What’s the story?
Well, the £3m defender revealed that life on Tyneside wasn’t always the happiest while Ashley held the reins at Newcastle.
Schar said: “Everyone at the club knows how comfortable I feel in this team and under this coach. I can well imagine staying at Newcastle beyond the summer. It wasn’t always like that; things weren’t always very happy for me under the old owner.”
By the sounds of it, the Switzerland international was considering a departure from St James’ Park before Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi showed up.
We don’t blame him. The Magpies were going nowhere with the 57-year-old at the helm, and there was a severe lack of ambition.
Newcastle didn’t win a single Premier League game in eight attempts under Steve Bruce this season, and there was no doubt they were nosediving towards the Championship.
Even then, there was not even a whisper of Bruce being sacked by Ashley, with the retail tycoon unmoved by the perilous situation.
Fabian Schar and Newcastle are on the up

Before the clash with Southampton, Newcastle were on an eight-game unbeaten run in the Premier League under Eddie Howe.
There were five wins from that impressive streak, taking the Magpies safely away from the relegation zone, which was once their natural habitat.
It has been a tremendous turnaround by Howe, and Schar has played a huge role.

The 30-year-old played every minute of that fantastic eight-game run, and even scored what turned out to be the winning goal against Brighton.
From a point of misery at Newcastle, Schar is shining on Tyneside with Ashley and Bruce now history amongst the Toon Army.
