Gary Neville has said on Sky Sports Premier League (5:51pm, January 2, 2021) that Liverpool central defender Virgil van Dijk struggled against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The former Manchester United defender was on co-commentary duty for the Premier League game between Chelsea and Liverpool in London on Sky Sports on Sunday.

The game ended in a 2-2 draw.

Liverpool were 2-0 up after just 26 minutes, but Thomas Tuchel’s side then scored twice.

Verdict on Virgil van Dijk v Chelsea

Neville said about Van Dijk: “Van Dijk is as good as it gets as a centre-back, but even he looks slightly uncomfortable today, on the ball and in his defensive work.”

Disappointing display for Liverpool

In our opinion, Van Dijk had a disappointing game on a personal level for Liverpool against Chelsea.

The Netherlands international centre-back is one of the best in the world, but he did not look very comfortable against Chelsea.

Van Dijk should have done better for the second goal that Chelsea scored.

We think that the former Celtic centre-back should have sprinted across to close down Christian Pulisic.

Van Dijk did not look great when he sprayed the passes either.

Manchester City are at the top of the Premier League table at the moment with 53 points from 21 matches.

Chelsea are second with 43 points from 21 games, while Liverpool are third on 42 points from 20 matches.
