Philipp Lahm is backing the “unbelievably successful” Hansi Flick to take over the German national team amid claims Tottenham Hotspur want the departing Bayern Munich boss, speaking to the Bundesliga website.

When Bayern handed over the keys to the Allianz Arena to former player Flick in November 2019, no-one could have predicted the glory that would follow.

Initially hired on an interim basis following the sacking of Niko Kovac, the 56-year-old has led the Bavarian giants to a staggering seven trophies in 18 months, including two Bundesliga titles and a Champions League crown.

So, with Tottenham crying out for a coach capable of turning the perennial bridesmaids into battle-hardened winners, it’s no wonder Flick has entered Daniel Levy’s thoughts (The Telegraph).

However, a man who served as Joachim Low’s assistant between 2006 and 2014 is expected to replace his mentor at the helm of the German national team instead in a move that has the backing of the country’s 2014 World Cup-winning captain.

“Firstly, (Low) has had an unbelievably successful time. If you look at the time from 2006 to 2016, we reached at least the semi-final in every major tournament, that’s sensational,” said Lahm, the Bayern and Germany legend.

“A big era is coming to an end. There will be changes, new players coming in, a new influence from a new coach, that’s normal.

“The German national team has always got a good squad. We’re a footballing nation, we always bring good players through. We see it now as well, we’ve got good players, experienced players.

“We’ve got players playing in Germany, players playing internationally at top clubs. I’m not worried at all.”

Flick may be walking away from Bayern following a series of public disagreements with his Saebener Strasse bosses, but he could soon be reunited with a number of familiar faces.

Serge Gnabry, Manuel Neuer, Leon Goretzka and co formed a huge part of his all-conquering Bayern Munich side and you can guarantee all three will have a big part to play for Flick’s Germany too.
