Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Gary Neville has been discussing Trent Alexander-Arnold after an awful couple of weeks for the England international.
Alexander-Arnold had what could be described as a career-worst performance against Brighton at the weekend, while he was also ignored by Gareth Southgate over the last international break.
Alexander-Arnold is being criticised left, right and centre at the moment, but Neville wanted to focus on the positives, reminding us all of Alexander-Arnold’s innate talent.
Indeed, the full-back is one of the most brilliant and unique players we’ve ever seen in English football, and Neville says that he could go down as the best right-back of all-time if he can fix the defensive side of his game – comparing Alexander-Arnold to two-time World Cup winner, Cafu.

Neville lauds Alexander-Arnold
The Sky Sports pundit gave the Liverpool star some special praise.
“No full-back that I’ve ever seen in this country can do what he can do, so if he can work on those basic things, we won’t have one of the best attacking right-backs England has ever produced, we’ll have probably the best right-back the world has ever produced,” Neville said.
“This is a Cafu, this is that level of full-back, it’s something unbelievably special.”
Generational
Alexander-Arnold may be having a rought time of it at the moment, but we shouldn’t forget the fact that he’s been one of the best players in the Premier League for almost five years now.
He’s the most unique creative full-back we’ve ever seen, and while these Cafu comparison may feel a tad early, Alexander-Arnold has already won every club trophy available to him, so he’s well on his way towards carving out a legendary legacy.
He does need to improve in certain areas, but if he can tighten up, he will certainly go down as one of the best full-backs this sport has ever seen.
