Steven Davis has told The Scottish Sun that he can’t quite get over the length of Rangers’ trophy drought.

The Gers have been back in the big time since 2016 but their return to the Premiership, unfortunately for them, coincided with the rise of one of the best Celtic teams in the history of Scottish football.

Rangers’ Old Firm rivals won a third successive domestic treble last month and fans of the Ibrox club are desperate to end their supremacy, having not won a major trophy since way back in 2011.

Davis was part of the side that won the Scottish Premiership and League Cup that year, before leaving 12 months later.

And although the Northern Irishman is stunned by the eight-year drought, Davis, who re-signed for the light Blues on a permanent basis this summer, says that it’ll be all the sweeter when Steven Gerrard’s side do pick up some long-awaited silverware.

He told The Scottish Sun: “It’s unbelievable not to have won anything for so long. In my time here and many years before the club was so used to having success every season.

It is quite a rare experience, but when we do pick up that first trophy again it will be all the sweeter. It would be huge to win again. That was the appeal for me coming back. I was going through a difficult time at Southampton and felt my time was up there.

“I wanted to come here to win trophies again before I finish playing.”

Rangers have been stuck on 54 league titles for almost a decade but there is optimism that Gerrard – who has signed six other players this summer – can mastermind the end of Celtic’s stronghold.
