Speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast, Michail Antonio has been talking about Jarrod Bowen and his recent form for West Ham.

The winger has been absolutely brilliant in recent weeks, he’s been scoring goal after goal for the Hammers, and he’s surely in line for an England call-up.

However, while Bowen has been fantastic in front of goal in recent weeks, Antonio says that the former Hull City man could have scored even more than he has been doing, stating that goalkeepers have been making unbelievable saves from his efforts.

What’s been said?

Antonio was speaking about Bowen’s recent goalscoring exploits.

“I wouldn’t say there are any secrets, Jarrod has always been able to score goals, you’ve seen that at Hull. Even here he got a few goals and assists last year, but in football you just need things to drop for you, and that’s what’s happening. The thing is, he could easily have had even more goals, but goalkeepers have been pulling off some unbelievable saves. Even though he has seven in seven, against Watford, Ben Forster made an unreal save and against Leicester there as a chance where he didn’t connect right, on another day he does and that’s two goals for him,” Antonio said.

Balances out

Antonio says that Bowen could have had a couple of more goals if goalkeepers hadn’t made brilliant saves, but it also works the other way around.

Some of Bowen’s finishes this season have been outrageous. His goals against Brentford and Chelsea this season actually had an xG of less than 0.1, but he still managed to find the back of the net, while his strike against Watford had an xG of just 0.02.

Yes, he’s missed certain chances – notably against Leeds, but everything balances itself out in the end.
