For the first time since the turn of the century, Accrington Stanley have kept a clean sheet in five consecutive games.

Just in case you were wondering, their best defensive run since 1999 has coincided with the emergence of a fresh-faced shot-stopper who, just two months after making his senior league debut, is already catching the eye of Premier League scouts.

The Sun (22 November, page 61) reports that Southampton are planning an overhaul of their goalkeeping options.

Fraser Forster and Angus Gunn could be on their way out of St Mary’s in 2021, with a 20-year-old from the third tier of English football lined up as a potential, long-term replacement.

And Accrington boss John Coleman knows, deep down, that it would be nothing short of a minor miracle if Savin is still producing those gravity-defying stops in Stanley colours when 2021/22 kicks off.

This may just be Savin’s Last Christmas at the Wham Stadium.

“Toby Savin has pulled off another unbelievable save at the end and it will be hard for us to keep hold of him,” Coleman admitted to the Lancashire Telegraph after Saturday’s goalless draw with Lincoln City.

A fifth consecutive clean sheet in the 1-0 triumph over Crewe Alexandra in midweek means a player who hadn’t even made a senior appearance before September has already made history between the sticks at Accrington Stanley.

A Southampton side credited with the discovery of Sadio Mane, Gareth Bale and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain might just have unearthed another gem.
