Speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast, Callum Wilson has been reacting to Bristol Rovers’ 7-0 win last weekend and he’s reserved special praise for Newcastle loanee Elliot Anderson.

If you missed it, last week, Bristol Rovers went into their final game of the season needing a five-goal swing in order to get promoted.

With Northampton winning their match 3-1, Rovers needed to win by no fewer than seven goals in order to secure an automatic promotion spot.

In the most incredible match of the season, Rovers actually managed to win 7-0, and their seventh goal came courtesy of Anderson.

What’s been said?

Wilson praised Anderson as he reacted to Bristol’s remarkable win.

“So, in terms of playoffs and things like that, last weekend, Bristol Rovers had to win 7-0 to go up, Northampton were almost celebrating at the end of the game, not knowing what happened, almost thinking Bristol haven’t won 7-0 in god knows how many years. What happened? They won 7-0. The scenes were incredible. Scunthorpe played their kids and Northampton will have been fuming at that. We have a youngster on loan there, Elliot Anderson, he scored the seventh goal and he’s an unbelievable player,” Wilson said.

Will he get his chance?

Wilson clearly rates Anderson very highly, and the 19-year-old has been showing his brilliance out on loan this season.

However, with the Magpies now possessing unimaginable riches, we have to wonder whether or not this young star will ever get his chance at Newcastle.

Indeed, one unfortunate by-product of Newcastle’s newfound spending power is the fact that academy stars are less and less likely to break through, and Anderson could be an early victim of a trend that’s bound to only get worse in the coming years.

Fingers crossed the youngster can do enough to impress Eddie Howe this summer.
