Peter Schmeichel has lauded Trent Alexander-Arnold after his free-kick goal helped Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool beat Leicester City 3-0 on Monday night in the Premier League.

The legendary goalkeeper added that Trent Alexander-Arnold was his ‘Man of the Match’ for Liverpool and he was ‘absolutely outstanding’ against the relegation-threatened side, as he told Premier League Productions (15/05/23 at 10:10 pm).

In truth, Curtis Jones’ early brace put the game to bed within the first half because Leicester’s morale and hopes of staying in the Premier League were on the floor – Michael Owen praised the Liverpool academy product.

But Jurgen Klopp has watched far too many performances this season, mainly on the road, where his team have looked abject on the road.

So, yesterday’s performance, added to what they have been producing for a number of weeks now, has been pretty positive and kept their Champions League hopes alive.

And Manchester United legend Schmeichel thinks Alexander-Arnold has played a part in that, as he shared his thoughts on the Englishman’s free-kick.

“This is unbelievable,” said Schmeichel. “We have been warned because he has done this before (against Chelsea). These free-kicks are the worst to face as a goalkeeper when they move the ball because then you have to move.

“We look at Iversen. He’s got nowhere near it, don’t get me wrong. But he looks far away because he takes a little step (to his right). For that, you have to adjust your position, for that touch. It’s very, very clever the way they did that, the way they as a team lined up the free-kick up, so they forced Iversen to be even further to where the ball actually goes in because they put two men next to the wall.

“I mean you have no chance. But this is so good – this is how you take a free kick. It was fantastic. For me, probably Man of the Match. Scoring that. He was absolutely outstanding.”

ENGLAND RECALL FOR ALEXANDER-ARNOLD?

On the international stage, it just hasn’t worked for Alexander-Arnold, even when he has been hitting form in recent years.

Is that the fault of Gareth Southgate? Or is it a case of the competition being too strong ahead of him?

Either way, Southgate has to recall Alexander-Arnold ahead of England’s next set of fixtures because these performances, towards the back end of the season, are very deserving of it.
