Liverpool’s victory over Newcastle United on Saturday highlighted a ridiculous depth that Jurgen Klopp has in his squad.
The Reds manager dropped a number of high-profile players – like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Thiago and Mohamed Salah – and still wound up returning to Anfield with a 1-0 victory.
Even Joe Gomez and James Milner earned rare starts in the Premier League for Liverpool.
However, both players were truly exceptional, particularly Gomez and Jamie Carragher praised him on Twitter afterwards.
Starting at right-back, the former Charlton defender, a £3.5 million signing in 2015, was given a 9/10 by The Liverpool Echo for his performance.
And speaking to the Reds’ official website, Milner has praised the England international, admitting he never even realised until a few months ago that he was capable of crossing a ball so well.
He said: “For Joey, for example, to come in this morning and perform like he did again was incredible. [He won] headers, they were loading his side, and going forward. I’ve realised over the last few months what a good crosser of the ball he is! It’s pleasing. Joey coming in at right-back was unbelievable again.”
Insane squad
This was only the 24-year-old’s third Premier League start of the campaign – and seventh appearance of the season overall in this competition.
The fact that Liverpool have a player of Gomez’s quality who can barely get on the pitch speaks volumes for how insanely good the squad is on Merseyside.
And really, it’s no wonder that the Reds are in contention for an unprecedented quadruple success this season.
Klopp’s side are one point behind Manchester City with four Premier League games to go and they’re preparing for a Champions League semi-final second leg against Villarreal this week, in which they hold a 2-0 advantage.
Oh, and Liverpool also have an FA Cup final with Chelsea on the horizon.
Winning all four competitions is a genuine possibility for the Anfield club and people like Gomez and Milner epitomise the strength of their squad.
