Writing in his column for Sportskeeda, Paul Merson has been discussing James Milner after his time-defying display against Manchester City at the weekend.
At the age of 36, against arguably the best team in the world, Milner put in a display worthy of the Man of the Match award against the reigning Premier League champions at the weekend.
Playing out of position at right-back, Milner barely put a foot wrong, and he didn’t look a day over the age of 20, nevermind 36.
Milner was unbelievable at the weekend, and he rightly earned a lot of praise from Merson.
Milner was incredible
Merson lauded the veteran midfielder for his showing against City.
“James Milner was brilliant – he was the oldest player on the pitch up against one of the youngest, and I can’t express how good that performance was. I know Joe Gomez got Man of the Match – and rightly so – but for Milner at 30-odd years of age to play like he did against Phil Foden was unbelievable,” Merson wrote.
“The Premier League’s all about being athletic, quick, and strong, and Milner keeps playing at this standard for one of the world’s top clubs – every kid should be looking up to him. He’s a manager’s dream.”
Perfect professional
After 20 years of playing top-level football there really isn’t much left to say about James Miner except that he’s the perfect professional.
He remains one of the fittest footballers in the Premier League and he can still put in outstanding performances against the very best teams in the world at this stage of his career.
Milner looks after himself brilliantly, by all accounts he’s the best player in Liverpool training, and as Merson says, everyone should use his as an example of how to conduct yourself if you want to be a professional footballer.
