Bruno Fernandes has admitted that he was left amazed by the Elland Road atmosphere during Manchester United’s 4-2 win over Leeds United on Sunday.

Speaking to Match of the Day 2, the Portuguese international revealed that he enjoyed the match in part to the level of noise and passion created by both the United and Leeds fans, with this fixture being the first with a full crowd in the Premier League at Elland Road in over 17 years.

Leeds and United have a rivalry that dates back to the 1960s, and each encounter since the Whites’ return to the English top-flight has been an entertaining affair, with the Red Devils enjoying plenty of goalscoring action.

Indeed, Leeds almost pulled off one of the comebacks after the season after they pulled back from 2-0 at half-time to take the score to 2-2 shortly after the restart. However, United were able to regain the match and secure a 4-2 win at Elland Road.

The three points will be huge for United in their quest to finish in the top-four, yet for Fernandes, he was left impressed by the atmosphere at Elland Road, which was on another level given the nature of the fixture.

The United star said when asked about the noise: “It was beautiful. It was great to enjoy it, obviously because I won the game. But it was a great atmosphere, we are also really thankful for our fans and the way they push us and trust us during the game, even when we conceded the goals. Unbelievable.”

The power of a strong home crowd cannot be underestimated in football. The likes of Anfield and the Westfalenstadion have become legendary for their intimidating atmospheres for away teams, and Leeds need make Elland Road such a ground.

After all, Leeds fans are some of the most passionate in the country, and against United, they showed how uncomfortable they can make Elland Road for rival clubs under the right circumstances, something supporters should be doing more in Premier League matches.
