Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has labelled his England teammate and Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold as an ‘unbelievable’ player.

On Friday, as Gareth Southgate’s England eased past Malta in their Euro 2024 qualifier, Trent Alexander-Arnold was used as a number 10 and he shone brightly by scoring a stunning effort from outside of the box.

Luke Shaw has watched the Liverpool star first-hand for England and he added that he is ‘one of the best in the world’ and someone who is an ‘incredible talent’ when he has the ball at his feet, as he told talkSPORT.

Whilst Shaw has been a constant regular for Gareth Southgate over the years and at major tournaments, the same can’t be said for Alexander-Arnold.

Never mind struggling to get into the XI, at times, he hasn’t even been picked, including for the most recent 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

But those who either see him training behind the scenes or come up against him, certainly understand what he is all about, which Shaw touched upon.

“He is an unbelievable player, don’t get me wrong,” said Shaw. “He is so, so good. An incredible talent. When the ball is at his feet, then there aren’t many better than him.

“I think he has shown that. You never know, it might be the start of something new (Trent playing as a ten). It was his first proper game there. I know he does it for Liverpool, but I think he was brilliant.

“For him now, it’s all about learning that role. A new role. I think he has the qualities and mindset to learn and understand the different roles he’s going to take. He is a fantastic player and one of the best in the world.”

It’s a big talking point and it seems as though it’s something fans want to see, both on the domestic and the international stage.

Those questions about Alexander-Arnold’s ability to defend will never go away, but he is asked fewer questions if he is higher up the pitch.

Whilst Southgate has deployed, and will probably now continue to do so, the Anfield academy product as a number ten, will Jurgen Klopp follow suit next season on the Premier League stage?
