Speaking on The Overlap, Jamie Carragher has been discussing Liverpool’s recent form and Virgil van Dijk.

The pundit says that he actually hasn’t been that impressed by the Reds in recent weeks. He states that his former team haven’t been playing that well, but the presence of Virgil van Dijk at the back is getting them over the line.

Indeed, Carragher says that van Dijk has been ‘unbelievable’ as of late stating that the Dutchman’s defensive brilliance has made sure that Liverpool only need to score one goal to win games lately.

What’s been said?

Carragher was full of praise for van Dijk.

“What they have done lately, Liverpool aren’t actually playing that well. The last few weeks, the West Ham game, Inter Milan, away at Brighton, Arsenal, Nottingham Forest in the cup. They’re grinding results out. I noticed against Arsenal, they outran them and had too much energy for them in the first-half, but they’re getting the job done. I think van Dijk has been unbelievable in this run in terms of keeping Liverpool really strong at the back and making sure they only need one goal to win a game,” Carragher said.

Champions’ form

Carragher is right, Liverpool haven’t been blowing teams away lately, but winning when you’re not playing well is how you become champions.

When Arsenal were at their best, Highbury chanted ‘1-0 to the Arsenal’ every single week, while Manchester United often had to scrape 1-0 victories by virtue of a moment of brilliance from Eric Cantona in the 1990s.

Van Dijk is, of course, incredibly different to Cantona, but he’s having a similar impact at Liverpool in carrying them through a tough period.
