Ally McCoist and Andy Walker were left stunned by Celtic not having a shot on target during their 2-0 defeat to Rangers on Saturday.
During their commentary stint for Sky Sports (17/10/20 late in the second half), Walker made it clear that ‘unbelievable isn’t the word’ when he was told about Celtic not having a shot on target and only one effort at goal during the second period.
This was no doubt the worst performance under Neil Lennon’s reign and one of the most lacklustre displays from a Celtic team in an Old Firm game in many, many years.
This was the exchange between McCoist and Walker, as they discussed Celtic’s lack of attacking intent when the game was coming to an end yesterday.
“I think this is one game right now where Celtic will be missing their support because they would not be accepting this,” McCoist told Sky Sports. “No urgency to get forward. The supporters will not be accepting this.”
On Celtic having nothing on target and one attempt in the second half: “I find that unbelievable in an Old Firm game, I really do,” McCoist added.
Walker then responded: “Unbelievable isn’t the word, it’s embarrassing – the only positive I would give Celtic is that last season when they lost this game, it didn’t really affect them. It just brought them closer together. It strengthens their resolve. You need that because this has been abject. It has been embarrassing.”
One of the positives Celtic can take is that they have always left their best football for the second half of the campaign.
But given the way they are going, they will leave themselves too much to do by the time the business end of the season arrives.
These upcoming games will be crucial for Lennon’s side because they need to show why they are champions by bouncing back in the way the Celtic fans know their team can.
