Ian Wright has praised Everton’s, Jordan Pickford, for his ‘magnificent’ and ‘unbelievable’ save during England’s 2-1 win over Switzerland on Saturday, as he told ITV Sport (26/03/22 at 11:10 pm).

Gareth Southgate’s side had to come from 1-0 down to claim a win in the friendly encounter at Wembley.

It could have been a lot different at 1-0 for the Swiss because Fabian Frei’s thunderous volley from inside the area was tipped onto the crossbar by Pickford.

That moment of play came from a corner, with no one marking Frei inside the box, as Pickford showcased quick reflexes and strong hands to keep the scoreline at 1-0.

Wright was left wowed by that moment of brilliance from Pickford, as he also shared his thoughts on the Everton 28-year-old never making an error leading to a goal during his 40 caps for his country.

“That was a magnificent save,” said Wright. “Unbelievable. Brilliant save. Fantastic.

On zero errors during his 40 caps for England: “You can’t argue with that, especially with Gareth seeing those stats and he sticks by them and with him.

“If he is making saves like that, then you aren’t going to leave him out. But, at the same time, he has got some good competition.

“He has to continue to put in performances like that for England.”

Aaron Ramsdale was initially selected by Southgate for this squad, but injury ruled him out of action.

The Arsenal number one, who joined the club from Sheffield United last summer, has had an outstanding campaign for his Champions League-chasing side so far.

There have been calls for Ramsdale to replace Pickford as England’s number one.

But given Pickford turns into a world-beater when repping the colours of his country, it’s going to be pretty hard to dethrone him from that spot before Qatar.
