Ian Wright has praised the ‘unbelievably driven’ Liverpool and Manchester City duo, Virgil van Dijk and Kevin de Bruyne.
The former striker added that both, who have been instrumental in Liverpool and Manchester City’s success, are also always ‘very serious’ out on the pitch, as he told the Premier League Season Review (24/05/22 at 3:15 pm).
It could be argued that de Bruyne is the first name on Pep Guardiola’s teamsheet and the same for Van Dijk at Anfield under Jurgen Klopp.
Either way, when putting together the best team in the world, many are certainly, without hesitation, having de Bruyne’s name next to Van Dijk’s.
Nonetheless, Wright was full of praise for the ‘very serious’ duo, who never smile out on that pitch.
“They are unbelievable players,” said Wright. “And they are unbelievably driven players.
“They never stop pushing the team on at any stage of the game. You look at Kevin de Bruyne, he is very serious in the game all the time. You don’t really see him smiling too much.
“The same with Van Dijk because we are talking about two leaders, who know they can’t afford to lose a game.
“That’s why you need players like them because they aren’t going to let you rest.”
VAN DIJK AND DE BRUYNE BEST IN THE WORLD IN THEIR POSITONS
For a number of years, both players could also argue that they are the best in the world in their positions.
Van Dijk has been ice-cool at the back for the Reds and he puts fear into the eye of attackers that they reverse back, even when one v one with the Dutchman – as he proved against Lautaro Martinez in the Champions League.
Whilst de Bruyne, as he proved on the last day of the season against Aston Villa, can drive through any team and pick out a pass like he has a Playstation controller in hand.
Nonetheless, when the duo hang up their boots, they are going to go down as modern-day greats, that’s for sure.
