
Everton fans have been left baffled by claims that Roberto Martinez is on Tottenham Hotspur’s wishlist to be their next manager.
The Daily Mail claim that Martinez is a potential candidate to replace Jose Mourinho at Spurs, five years after a disappointing spell at Goodison Park.
Martinez was expected to be the manager to take Everton to new heights, but he never truly won over their fan base.
And Toffees supporters are shocked that the 47-year-old is being linked to the Tottenham job now.
Martinez has since gone away from Everton and done an credible job with Belgium.
His other two managerial stints – at Swansea City and Wigan Athletic – were also highly impressive.
However, there were flaws that were exposed at Everton which could be worrying for Tottenham.
Martinez’s failure to ever sort of the Toffees defensive issues which a real source of frustration during his time on Merseyside.
The Spaniard was also accused of over exaggerating positives in the media, which began to rankle with the Goodison Park faithful.
If he did take over at Tottenham he may find that Everton are one of his direct rivals now.
The Toffees have shown great ambition to break into the top four in recent years, and with Carlo Ancelotti at the helm there is widespread optimism that they could be real contenders next term.
