Trevor Sinclair has claimed that the time has come for Tottenham Hotspur to look at replacing Hugo Lloris for the long term.
The France international had been one of Spurs’ best and most consistent performers for much of Jose Mourinho 15-month spell in North London.
But in recent weeks, Lloris has looked like reverting to the same error-prone goalkeeper who cost Tottenham a lot of points in the final year or so of Mauricio Pochettino’s reign at the club.
Lloris, who cost the Lilywhites £12 million in the summer of 2012, turned 34 in December and Sinclair believes that Jose Mourinho and Daniel Levy should seriously look at signing a long-term replacement this summer.
He told talkSPORT, when talking about the positions that need to be strengthened: “The goalkeeping area, I think you look at Hugo Lloris. His confidence has gone. I think he’s probably had his best days. Some of the goals he’s conceded have been unacceptable for a Premier League goalkeeper.”
Is Sinclair right? Well, he might have a point.
You never get the impression that he’s a million miles from making a mistake anymore, which is a problem because if the supporters are nervous of him, the back four might be too.
Then again, 34 isn’t that old for a goalkeeper and it wouldn’t be a major surprise if Lloris bounced back once more.
But long term, Tottenham should certainly look at a long-term replacement.
