Ahead of England’s all-important semi-final clash with Argentina, one British journalist has noticed something a bit concerning.
As the fans poured into the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, it became clear who was going to have the upper hand — at least in terms of fan support.
England had to deal with being vastly outnumbered by Mexico fans at the Azteca a couple of weeks ago in the round of 16, and early signs point to a similar disadvantage for their match against Argentina.
For every England shirt Daily Mail reporter Mike Keegan has seen, he has spotted four blue and white shirts filling the stands, even the sections reserved for the English.
It’s a strange one. The two countries are a similar distance from the World Cup, so you would have thought there would be a balance in the attendance.
Seemingly not, though. The famously passionate Argentina fans have filled the streets of Atlanta for the last two days, and that presence has carried into the ground.
There’s no denying that it will have an effect on proceedings, but the traveling English fans have been excellent all tournament. There’s no reason to think they won’t make themselves heard, outnumbered though they may be.
