Former Villa striker Thompson was not overly impressed with the performance of Garry Monk’s team.

“When you’re trailing the game, you do need to move forwards and look forwards quickly, and Villa didn’t do that,” Thompson told BBC Sport (19:29).

“People will talk about the mentality of this team and Steve Bruce has done a lot, but the players need to stand up now and make sure they don’t roll over. They look harder to beat now.

“Leeds have shown very little tonight – ugly but effective. They don’t look like an outstanding side and Villa can be up there if they do the right things.”
