The UFC’s return to Winnipeg has one less bout on the schedule, though there’s still a chance it could be restored.
This week, the Octagon sets up shop at the Canada Life Centre for a UFC Fight Night card.
Leading the event is Canadian Mike Malott, who faces off against former title challenger Gilbert Burns in a welterweight main event that should have plenty of local support.
While several undercard matchups have potential to deliver, one fight that was expected to catch fans’ attention has been dropped from the lineup. That could change though. There are reasons why this particular matchup should be given another look.
UFC Winnipeg: Cody Durden open to Allan Nascimento rematch on short notice
Mitch Raposo and Allan Nascimento’s planned flyweight fight was removed from the UFC Winnipeg card this week.
The news came out on Thursday after Raposo’s illness forced him to withdraw, with Nascimento sharing the update through his social media.
“Unfortunately, my fight here in Winnipeg has been canceled,” he posted. “My opponent got sick during the week and we just received the news now. I did everything right, perfect preparation, weight practically made, but it’s part of the game.
“We’re still ready, it’s just a matter of time. We’ll be back soon,” he added.
While there are reports suggesting that a June 20 rescheduling is being considered, another fighter in the division has put himself forward as a short-notice replacement for this weekend.
Cody Durden has publicly offered to step in for a rematch with Nascimento at UFC Winnipeg, just months after losing to him by submission last November at the Apex facility.
Durden is currently on a tough stretch of form, having lost four straight fights and six of his last seven inside the Octagon. Despite that run of results, he remains vocal about his readiness to compete.
Nascimento is coming off four consecutive wins and closing in on a place in the top 15 rankings at flyweight. He also holds notable ties as a training partner of former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira.
