With UFC 317 fast approaching, the promotion isn’t taking any chances this time around.

Ilia Topuria and Charles Oliveira are set to clash for the vacant lightweight belt on June 28 – and this time, someone will be ready if things fall apart late.

Earlier this year, UFC 311 was left without a backup plan, leading to a wild 24-hour scramble after Arman Tsarukyan withdrew at the last minute. Islam Makhachev eventually faced Renato Moicano, but it was far from an ideal situation.

This time around, the UFC is getting ahead of any potential chaos.

On Sunday, Russian racecar driver Nikita Mazepin posted an Instagram photo alongside Arman Tsarukyan. A fan asked Tsarukyan when he would fight next and his reply made it clear he’s staying ready.

“I’m the backup for UFC 317,” Tsarukyan commented.

Dana White hasn’t announced Tsarukyan’s role yet. A formal statement is expected in the coming weeks. Currently, the Russian-Armenian fighter holds the top spot in the lightweight rankings.

Tsarukyan got a much-needed win last month, submitting Patricky ‘Pitbull’ Freire in a grappling match at ADXC. He overcame the longtime Bellator veteran by submission in the 5th round.

Afterward, Tsarukyan spoke about repairing his reputation. His withdrawal from UFC 311 was due to injury, but he feels the situation was mishandled and left many fans thinking he ducked a title shot against Makhachev.

“The doctor didn’t let everybody know what really happened, so some people still think I ducked that fight,” Tsarukyan said. “Now I just need to get back on track, so I’m going to do whatever the UFC tells me to do.”

He also said he’d be open to stepping in for other major fights if needed.

“I will be ready. I’m flying back to the US now and will be staying there in case anyone is injured and they ask me if I’m ready. I will say yes.”

When asked if he’d serve as backup for Dustin Poirier vs Max Holloway 3 at UFC 318, Tsarukyan was confident: “Absolutely positive.”

For Tsarukyan, UFC 317 isn’t just another eventual fight. It’s a chance to step back into the title picture and put the doubts behind him once and for all.
